In this video, you can see Wilcox Diving perform an underwater intake screen cleaning for a raw river water intake system. Even with an air burst system (such as those from Air Power Products), typically only the larger debris that collects around the intake screens is cleared, and that is only from about the 10:00 position to the 2:00 position.

Air travels straight up underwater, and the Air Burst will not clean the marine growth or move larger debris from the 2:00 position downward to the 6:00 position and back up to the 10:00 position.

The raw water intake screen material has such small perforations that even a small amount of growth will obstruct flow and put a heavier load on the river pumps.
